We analyzed 1,000+ active AI engineering job listings with disclosed salaries on SuperAIDevs. Every listing is real, live, and updated daily. Here's what the numbers show about remote vs on-site compensation.

Remote AI engineers earn $30K less per year on average.

This isn't a small gap. If you work remotely for 5 years, that's $150K in foregone compensation — enough to buy a house in many markets.

But averages hide the real story. The gap varies enormously depending on where you live and what you build.

The City Effect

The highest-paying AI jobs are concentrated in a handful of cities. If you're remote, you're competing against candidates in these markets — and the employer is factoring location into your offer.

Go developers are the exception — remote Go roles pay more than on-site, likely because Go expertise is distributed unevenly and companies are willing to pay for it regardless of location.

For most other stacks, the remote penalty is real and significant.

Why This Happens

Three factors drive the gap:

1. Location-based compensation

Companies adjust salary bands by cost of living. A remote engineer in Austin doesn't get SF pay. Since remote roles draw from a wider geographic pool (including lower-cost areas), the average drops.

2. On-site roles cluster in high-pay markets

The highest-paying AI jobs are disproportionately in SF, NYC, and DC. These are also the least likely to be remote (only 28% of SF AI jobs are remote vs 42% nationally). The on-site average is inflated by geography.

3. Remote hiring is more competitive globally

When you open a role to remote, you're competing against the global talent pool. Employers know this and adjust offers accordingly. On-site roles have a smaller, more expensive labor pool.

What This Means for Engineers

If you're optimizing for total comp

Go to SF or NYC for 2-3 years. The salary bump alone — even after adjusting for cost of living — puts you ahead by $30K+/year. More importantly, the network and experience accelerate your career trajectory.

If you value remote work

You're trading $30K/year for location flexibility. That's a perfectly valid choice. But go in with eyes open. Negotiate harder — especially if you have in-demand skills like Go or infrastructure experience.

If you're hiring

The remote salary gap is an opportunity. You can hire top AI talent at 14% below market by offering remote flexibility. The best engineers who value location independence will trade salary for freedom — and they're often the most productive.

The One Counterintuitive Finding

We expected the remote penalty to shrink for senior roles. It didn't.

If you're optimizing for income, move to a tech hub. If you're optimizing for lifestyle, remote is a trade — one that thousands of engineers are making consciously.
