Asset Strategies Group Software Engineer – AI Specialist Location: On-site – Columbus, OH area Type: Full-time About Us We're a growing retail consultancy company with expertise in real estate strategy, design and development, store planning and construction, and lease management. For the last 17 years, we have been developing a SaaS product in the real estate lifecycle management space used by clients for strategy, deal negotiation, and construction management. Our software team builds and maintains the systems that power these workflows for national retail and real estate clients. We're now investing in AI as a core part of both our product and our internal operations, and we're looking for someone to lead that effort hands-on — building real integrations in our codebase, not just running pilots on the side. What You’ll Do Platform & Product AI Design, build, and maintain a RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) system over our internal and client-facing documents and data, so AI tools can search, summarize, and reason over our real content accurately Build and manage our AI infrastructure on AWS Bedrock — model selection and evaluation, prompt/version management, cost monitoring, and security/IAM configuration for AI workloads Design and ship integrations that bring AI capabilities directly into our platform (in-app assistants, document generation, data extraction) as well as into supporting tools (Jira, Bitbucket, Confluence) Build reusable AI "skills" and internal tools that let other teams — analysts, PMs, client services — use AI safely and effectively in their own work. Engineering Process Identify and implement opportunities to apply AI to our own development process: automated code review support, test generation, documentation, ticket triage, PR review assistance Partner directly with the development team to ensure AI-driven features meet the same code quality, security, and testing standards as the rest of the platform Participate in peer code review and ticket-based feature work like the rest of the team when work sits in the core codebase Governance & Enablement Own our internal AI standards: draft and maintain acceptable-use policy and data-handling guidelines, particularly for sensitive client real estate/retail data flowing through AI tools Serve as a subject-matter expert on AI — evaluate new models, tools, and vendors, and advise leadership on risk, opportunity, and recommended direction Provide training, documentation, and hands-on support so non-engineering staff can access and use AI tools and data confidently and safely Document standards and share knowledge (via Confluence) so AI practices scale across the company rather than living in one person's head Our Tech Stack Backend: Python, Flask, MySQL Frontend: JavaScript, Backbone.js, Bootstrap UI Infrastructure: AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, Bedrock), Ubuntu, Apache Version Control : Git, Bitbucket (feature branches, pull requests) Project Management : JIRA / Confluence (tickets, sprint, documentation) Integrations: Third-party APIs supporting retail and real estate workflows What We’re Looking For 3+ years of professional software development experience on production applications (Python preferred) Hands-on experience building or integrating LLM-based systems — RAG pipelines, embeddings/vector search, prompt engineering, or AI agents Experience with AWS Bedrock or a comparable managed AI/ML platform, or strong ability to ramp up quickly Comfort working inside an existing production codebase and shipping real, maintainable features — not just prototypes or notebooks Strong communication skills; able to translate technical AI concepts for non-technical stakeholders and influence company-wide practices Understanding and good judgment around data security, privacy, and responsible AI use, especially with sensitive client data Experience working with relational databases and APIs Familiarity with testing practices, code review workflows, or QA processes in order to assist in designing AI-assisted versions of these for the team, not just consuming them Comfort working in a collaborative team environment with code reviews and shared ownership Self-directed — comfortable scoping and driving your own projects with less day-to-day ticket structure than the rest of the dev team Preferred: experience working on technical standards or policy, evaluating AI vendors/tools, or building internal developer tooling Plus: background in retail, real estate, construction, or related industries How You Will Work You will split time between platform-integrated feature work (tracked in JIRA, same PR/review process as the rest of the team), open-ended AI R&D, and AI support work across the company. You will work closely with the Director of Technology & Strategy Analytics to set AI priorities and discuss progress towards larger goals You will help present recommendations and policy proposals to leadership, and train or support other teams directly.
